Most cats are small cats - some no bigger than a
house cat

For some, such as the Andean mountain cat
(
Oreailurus jacobita), we know only that it
exists in the high Andes of South America. I
believe this situation must change. The Andean
mountain cat photo shown here is one I took
after spending 2 months at 14,500ft on the
Chile-Bolivia border. This is one of the most
stunningly beautiful cats on Earth and one of
the most elusive. We know very little of its
ecology, behavior, or habitat requirements. I
strongly suspect it is very rare but this does not
help me in planning a conservation strategy.

Sadly, this is the situation for most small cats.
Indeed, few if any field studies have been
undertaken on the Sand cat (
Felis margarita),
Pampas cat (
Oncifelis colocolo),Oncilla or
Tigrina (
Leopardus tigrinus), Margay
(
Leopardus weidii), Marbled cat (Pardofelis
marmorata
), or Bay cat (Catopuma badia).
