What makes the Guigna special?
Chile has five species of cats: Puma, Geoffroy's cat,
Andean mountain cat, Guigna, and Pampas cat. Guignas
have the smallest geographic range of any cats and are
the smallest cat in the Americas. On Chiloe Island males
weighed up to 2.4 kg and females 1.7 kg but on mainland
Chile males and females weigh less. Guignas are much
smaller than house cats.
Fortunately we know something about Guigna ecology and
behavior, and understand threats to wild Guignas. We can
also identify several high conservation value areas for
Guignas. One site in the foothills of the Andes is southeast
of Temuco. Another site on Chiloe Island is southeast of
Castro.
Continuing rapid habitat fragmentation and destruction,
and the replacement of native forests by production wood
plantations are taking a very heavy toll on Guigna habitat.
Monitoring high conservation value sites is vital.
