ENSURING A FUTURE FOR THE ANDEAN CAT
|
Working with the local indigenous people and monitoring the impacts of global
warming on the Andean cat and its prey are the only way to ensure that the Andean
cat will continue to exist in the wild. After a decade of work we know where
significant populations of the Andean cat occur and where local communities are
receptive to conservation actions.
We do not need to purchase land. The Small Wild Cat Conservation Foundation
(SWCCF), WildCats Chile, a Chilean non-profit, and CONAF, the government agency
responsible for managing national parks and production forests, are working
together. CONAF has agreed to allow SWCCF & WCC to construct a new building on
their compound at Salar de Surire. This is an unprecedented opportunity to create
the first Andean cat conservation and monitoring center.
The Ice Box (far right) will be
replaced with our new building
that attaches to the CONAF
building in the middle. Solar
PV will provide electricity;
solar hot water will be used,
and trombe walls will provide
solar heating and cooling. This
view is looking west.
